Ring Rust Review: The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year

So this week with roughly thirty days left until Wrestlemania the semblance of a card seems to be forming.  Now in WWE time thirty days is a long time and a lot can happen between now and then, but let’s talk about how this card is taking shape. Let’s also speculate a bit on what we might be seeing.  The two main events seem to be in place

Chris Jericho vs. Edge

Now I don’t know about anyone else but I’m looking forward to this match. Edge is no stranger to the Wrestlemaina main event in recent history; however it’s been a while for Mr. Jericho. I think these two will tear up the show.  While it seems that Edge may have “the edge “and certainly the popular vote I look for Chris to win this match. First it will feed into his character nicely, can you imagine the promo he will cut the night after Wrestlemania if he wins. Second I think he needs this more than Edge, Chris has still to establish himself with a good long (as long as one can get these days) title run and cement his already impressive legacy.  Edge has become a great heel through the years I think should continue in that role unless he changes his character again (becoming more of the guy he was back in his tag team days). The crazed Edge works best as a heel.

Batista vs. John Cena

Of all the wonderful things that could have happened in the Elimination Chamber we get stuck with this? Now don’t get me wrong I am not a Cena hater. I like Cena he does his job and seems to really enjoy it, which is more than I can say for most including some who are “popular” among certain wrestling groups. That being said this feud could have been saved for after Wrestlemaina, these two have been fighting each other for years, nothing new. The fact that they got thrown into the Hart storyline even makes it worse.  Batista sucks as a heel and I don’t mean the fact he’s been dressing from the Tiger Woods K-Mart collection I just think it does not fit his personality. As a face he is fine and sometimes enjoyable, as a heel not so much.

Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels

The match so nice they did it twice (sorry).  Of course they had to add the extra wrinkle of HBK retiring if he loses the match.  I am not buying this, of course HBK could be ready to retire, I would not blame him and he certain has earned the rest but I don’t see this happening.  On the other hand I don’t see him breaking the streak either.  Why should he, I mean as great as Shawn is he already was given the honor of “retiring” Ric Flair a couple of years back, I don’t think he needs this.  Besides this might be the deadman’s last Wrestlemania match and it would be silly to end the streak at this point. The solution is simple, Undertaker wins, Shawn retires for a bit then some major event or something will happen that will “force” Shawn to come back around Summer Slam. After all let’s remember the Undertaker lost a retirement match to Edge a while back and he seems to have recovered.

Bret Hart vs. Vince McMahon

This is strictly for the older fans (those who are left). This should be somewhat entertaining I guess, it won’t last long but everyone needs a bathroom break. The tragic part about this whole storyline is the lack of involvement from the Hart Dynasty. The Hart family has always been close and it seems out to keep them out of this and stuck on Superstars. You would think Uncle Bret would have done more for the youngsters. By the way I know this is out of the blue but seeing that Bret can’t really take much of a bump don’t be surprised if we get a run in save, maybe the Anvil or maybe something a little colder. You never know it would fit and it is Wrestlemaina.

The rest of the card has yet to be announced but if you’ve been watching WWE programming for a while you can see where it might be going. Expect Drew to defend his IC title against maybe Morrison or Truth, which is fine because I think Ron deserves a little run with the belt. Sorry John Morrison fans but the kid is getting kid has gone to cool heel to annoying face.  MITB ladder match is always a good watch, and will certainly provide some great highlights. I hope to see Evan in this (please), while I don’t see him winning I bet he can do some sick stuff with those ladders. My pick would be either Kane or Christian and I would be happy with either. The Divas will have some kind of battle royal or something for those of us who need more than one bathroom break or a quick beer run.

This is one of the best times to be a WWE fan, everyone who doesn’t get fired seems to turn up there game a little bit (wonder if it’s a coincidence). Wrestlemaina brings out the best in people. The wrestlers perform better because of this history (and the nice payday helps). WWE is happy because they get to charge more money for tickets and PPV pricing making them more money, and the fans get at least one quality PPV per year.  Well it’s been a fairly busy time in wrestling from the TNA announcement to NXT, people getting their future endeavored.  That’s for next time, until then…..yep….let’s watch
