– Former World Champion Chris Jericho appeared on FOX News’s “Red Eye” show at 2:00 a.m. this morning to discuss the debut of his “Redemption Song” reality show. The show debuts at 11:00 p.m. EST on FUSE TV with Jericho hosting the running series where 11 washed-up female singers get another chance to become music stars.
Jericho joked that he was asked to host the show because Screech from “Saved by the Bell” was unavailable. Of course, Screech appearing on Hulk Hogan’s reality show right now. Jericho said his performance background in WWE and being in his own band formed a nice resume the TV producers were looking for in a host.
He said the secret to the show is that there really is a heart. Viewers will laugh at first at how screwed-up the contestants appear to be, but there really is a chance for them to be more than they are, which is party girls, strippers, and drug addicts.
Jericho’s appearances on the show are limited to eliminations and instructions for the contestants, which he said made him the Angel of Death to the girls throughout the series. They didn’t see much of him, otherwise, and Jericho joked that his wife was okay with him hosting because he knew the crazy girls wouldn’t be his type.
Greg Gutfeld, a witty satirist, asked a serious question about whether the process of trying to be a music star is what got them in trouble in the first place. Jericho said most of them are just party girls who have talent, but have no way to channel it. Take them off the bars, off the streets, and give them a chance at redemption, he said.
Gutfeld then asked whether there’s more drug use among this group of contestants than in wrestling. “I would think so at this point in time,” he said. “We’re so strictly tested now. If you have a cold, you can’t take Nyquil because you’ll be busted. Take all the fun out if it!”
